Olympics-bound shot-putter Tom Walsh has finished second in the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon, the latest leg of the Diamond League.

In cold conditions in Eugene, Walsh hit his longest throw of 20.86 metres on his third attempt.

He was well behind world champion American Joe Kovacs, who had a big series of throws culminating in a 22.13m effort.

Another American, previous world champion and 2012 London Olympics medallist Reese Hoffa, was third with 20.58m.

Walsh's finish was a repeat of his Diamond League placing in Shanghai two weeks ago and he picks up another six points to sit second on 12 points, two behind leader Kovacs.

He said he was reasonably happy with the result, given the quality of the field and the less than ideal conditions.

Coach Dale Stevenson was satisfied with Walsh's progress this early in the season, saying things were on track heading towards Rio.
