New Zealand shot putter Tom Walsh has continued his thunderous shot put form, winning the Diamond League title with a record-breaking throw in Zurich.

For the second time in a week, Walsh eclipsed the world's best throwers and extended his national record, unfurling a winning distance of 22.20m.

It was 20cm further than American Olympic champion Ryan Crouser could manage, handing Walsh victory and the Diamond League points title.

Last week he won in Paris with a best of 22m exactly, which usurped his own former national and Oceania marks.

His form comes two weeks too late for the 24-year-old from Timaru, who secured bronze at the Rio Olympics with a best throw of 21.36m.

Walsh was fourth in the 10-man field on Thursday after opening with a 20.73m throw.

He improved to second with a 21.12m effort in the second round before unleashing his record throw in round three. He finished with a 21.25m throw.

American Joe Kovacs was the only athlete who could overhaul Walsh on the Diamond League point standings. However, his best was 20.91m in the final round to place third.
