NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 15/06/2016

New Zealand's Tom Walsh has unleashed a consistent series of throws to comfortably win a Diamond League shot put competition in Stockholm.

With most of his Olympic medal rivals missing, Walsh finished 59cm clear of the field to land his second Diamond League title continue his encouraging progress towards the Games in Rio.

The 24-year-old world indoor champion showed impressive consistency following a three-week training stint in the United States although he fell just short of his season-best 21.20m achieved in Shanghai a month ago.

His winning throw on Wednesday was 21.13m, achieved in the second round. His other five scoring throws were within 20cm of that, with a lone foul recorded in the fourth round.

Michal Haratyke of Poland was second with a best of 20.54m while Canada's Tim Nedow was third with 20.44m.

Walsh improves to second in the Diamond League standings after four of seven rounds. He has accrued 22 points to sit two behind American world champion Joe Kovacs.

He will contest the London Diamond League meet in late July, two weeks out from the start of the Olympics.
