A man described as dangerous has been bitten by a police dog while trying to avoid arrest in south Auckland.

Kershaw Howard, 28, was wanted over the armed robbery of a Birkdale dairy last month and was arrested on Monday after trying to flee a Papakura address.

Police said he was under police guard at Middlemore Hospital after being bitten by a dog.

He will face aggravated robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm charges in the North Shore District Court when released from hospital.

Police late last month said Howard was dangerous and was actively avoiding arrest.
