Warning about child safety in Tasman

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 3/06/2016

A man in a white van has been behaving suspiciously near children near Nelson but reports on social media of attempted child abductions are wrong, police say.

On May 28 a 12-year-old girl reported a man in a white van parked in Stafford Drive, Ruby Bay, was staring at her, and two days later a young girl said after school a man from a white van followed her on foot along Salisbury Road in Richmond.

The man was described as being in his 40s with dark facial hair.

Detective Sergeant Mark Kaveney of the Nelson Bays Child Protection Team said at this stage there was no evidence to suggest the two incidents were related to each other but police were keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed either of the incidents or has information about them.

He said recent reports on social media of two or three attempted abductions of young girls in the area were not accurate.

"However, this is a good time to remind parents to talk to their children about their security and to report any incidents to Police at the time."

The local school principals and police are working together to mitigate any risks to the public.
