Anyone who comes across large containers of nitric acid are being warned they could cause serious harm in the wrong hands.

Four 20 litre tubs of the liquid were stolen from a farm at Mosgiel near Dunedin on Monday.

Dunedin Police are concerned the thieves - or anyone handed the nitric acid - are at serious risk of harming themselves if they don't handle the containers with extreme caution.

The nitric acid is usually used in hydroponics and anyone handling it must use protective gear.

Several tools were also taken in during the Wingatui Road burglary, including chainsaws.
