Warnings over Wellington's swim spots

With a fine Waitangi weekend forecast, Wellingtonians itching for a bit of beach life have been warned to stay away from the water in the harbour and Lyall Bay because of contamination.

Heavy rain on Thursday caused a five-minute overflow at the Moa Point wastewater treatment plant.

The wastewater was heavily diluted but warning signs have been put up at Lyall Bay warning swimmers and surfers to stay out of the water until Sunday, says Wellington City Council spokesman Richard MacLean.

Thursday's heavy rain would have also washed more contaminants into the harbour through stormwater drains and people were advised not to swim in it.
