State Highway 6 between Fox Glacier and Haast on the West Coast is closed after a culvert washout after heavy rain.

The Douglas Culvert was impassable following heavy rain on Wednesday morning and would be reassessed at midday, the New Zealand Transport Agency says.

It was urging people to delay travel on SH6.

It had earlier issued a warning about a number of small slips leaving debris on the road in the Haast-Harihari area.

The MetService has issued a severe weather warning for Westland with thunderstorms and up to 100mm of rain expected to fall in the ranges in the six hours up to midday.
