Watling scored 38 not out off 92 balls for Northern Districts on the first day of their Plunket Shield match against Otago in Whangarei as the hosts reached 269-9.

The 31-year-old hasn't played since the Test series against Bangladesh a month ago, with Black Caps medical staff asking him to rest a niggly knee sprain which had been hampering him this summer.

Watling appears ready to earn a 50th cap in the first of three Tests, starting in Dunedin on March 8.
