Watson in Ryder Cup support role for US

US Ryder Cup captain Davis Love believes he has the perfect team after appointing Bubba Watson as his fifth vice-captain, despite having overlooked him for a wild card.

Two-time Masters champion Watson missed out despite being ranked seventh in the world, but had twice made it clear to Love that he still wanted to be involved at Hazeltine this week.

"Bubba was disappointed not to be on the team but offered a couple of times to be an assistant captain so he is back in the hotel changing from player clothes to assistant captain clothes," Love told a press conference on Monday.

"I called him and told him I was going in a different direction and he immediately said I still want to be a part of this team if you'll have me ... an incredible gesture.

"When I told the team members and assistant captains last night, we were still in disbelief.

"What Bubba did really shows how together the US team really is and we are excited to have him."

Love only decided to make Ryan Moore the 12th member of his side after he lost out in a play-off to Rory McIlroy for the Tour Championship on Sunday, contacting the 33-year-old as he boarded a plane to Las Vegas.

"I said, 'You want to stop in Minnesota?'," Love added. "After we talked for a little while, he said, 'Should I really stop there or can I take my family home?'.

"So he ended up flying all the way home and dropping all them off and turning around and coming back up here this morning. It was exciting to get to give him that news because I know he's been on the bad end of that a few times."
