`We can win Clutha-Southland': Peters

National has to select a fresh candidate for Clutha-Southland now Todd Barclay is standing down, and Winston Peters is talking up his party's chances of winning the seat.

"We have a brilliant candidate in Mark Patterson, he's high up in Federated Farmers, high up in all sorts of agribusiness," Mr Peters told reporters on Wednesday.

"He left National to join us a long time ago, and he's the most qualified candidate down there - he's got a roaring chance of getting into parliament."

Clutha-Southland is a safe National seat, previously held by Prime Minister Bill English, and in 2014 Mr Barclay won it with a majority of nearly 15,000.

Mr Peters says his party will be supported by voters who have in the past backed National.

"I don't think it, I know it," he said.

"Wait till we get down there in the next two weeks, in places like Gore and Invercargill.

"It's going to be exciting, we're going to get some serious backing down there because it's been building up for a long time."
