Webster edges Dawkins in sprint final

Sam Webster got the better of teammate Eddie Dawkins to claim the individual sprint title at Oceania track cycling championships in Melbourne.

Webster, who was only fourth-fastest qualifier, beat Dawkins in the final after earlier overcoming top qualifier, Australia's Matthew Glaetzer in the semi-finals.

Glaetzer, fourth in the event at the Rio Olympics, beat the third member of the New Zealand team sprint combination, Ethan Mitchell, in a ride-off for third.

Former world omnium champion Aaron Gate won the Oceania title after winning the temp and points race, and placing second in the elimination race and third in the scratch race, while compatriot Regan Gough, who won the elimination race,was second.

Australian Ashlee Ankudinoff won the women's omnium with Kiwis Racquel Sheath and Holly Edmondston filling the minor placings.
