Weldon quits as MediaWorks boss

NZN 3/05/2016

Mark Weldon has resigned as boss of television and radio company MediaWorks.

The under-pressure chief executive tendered his resignation to the board on Tuesday evening.

"I have come to a decision that the personal cost is now too high to continue in this role," Mr Weldon said.

Mr Weldon, the former head of stock exchange operator NZX, joined the company in August 2014 and oversaw a raft of changes at the media company.

He took an axe to current affairs programming, cutting TV3's Campbell Live, its presenter John Campbell also left, along with long-serving head of news Mark Jennings and last week TV newsreader Hilary Barry said she was leaving the network.

Mr Weldon emerged from a board meeting on Monday saying he still had the confidence of the board.

"I feel confident that I will be leaving behind a much stronger business than existed when I arrived," he said in his resignation statement.

He also presided over the merger of the company's TV, radio and digital operations into a single entity, Newshub, earlier this year.
