Wellington Airport still closed by fog

Passengers remain stranded at Wellington's airport as fog has led to the cancellation of flights for a second day.

All flights have been cancelled through to 7.15am on Thursday, apart from one departing for Brisbane which has been pushed back to near midday, according to Wellington International Airport.

Air New Zealand has advised it will bring bigger planes into Wellington Airport when it resumes operations from 9am, weather permitting.

This includes a 312-seat Boeing 777-200 to help get stranded passengers to their destinations faster.

Customers no longer needing to travel before Thursday midday are able to automatically transfer their booking to another date or keep the fare value in credit.

Crowds had been building at Wellington and Auckland airports since Wednesday morning, with dozens hunkered down in waiting lounges by the afternoon.

International flights have also been affected.

The MetService is forecasting fog and rain for Thursday morning but that it will clear to fine spells in the afternoon.
