A 15-storey Wellington office block, home to Inland Revenue, has been closed over concerns about its stairwell after last Monday's massive quake.

The Asteron Centre opposite the railway station was evacuated on Wednesday afternoon as a precaution after a report raised questions over the integrity of the stairs.

The Featherston Street building is described as Wellington's largest single office block and has been open since 2010.

Tenants also include the Civil Aviation Authority, Suncorp and Callaghan Innovation.
