Wellington council seeks housing partners

The Wellington City Council are looking to partner up with developers to refurbish inner-city buildings into social and affordable apartments.

Mayor Justin Lester says housing is the biggest issue facing Wellington right now and bold action needs to be taken.

This would involve converting existing underused buildings into new apartments.

"I expect some will be social housing managed by community housing providers, others will be affordable rentals targeted to the lower end of the market," Mr Lester said.

Some hotels and student accommodation have already been developed from old buildings and the Wellington City Council wants it now for affordable rental homes.

The plan is expected to pay for itself over the lifetime of the project, Deputy Mayor and Council Housing Portfolio Leader Paul Eagle says.

The cost will be neutral for rate-payers, he says, as the building owners will pay for the refurbishments and tenants will pay for rent.
