Police say there appear to be no suspicious circumstances around the discovery of a middle-aged woman's body in Wellington Harbour.

The woman's body was spotted in the water at Queens Wharf about 6.30am on Friday.

It was recovered and police say they have established she was middle-aged.

"The death is being treated as unexplained, but at this stage there appear to be no suspicious circumstances," Detective Senior Sergeant Kevan Verry said in a statement.

Police are now trying to find out how she came to be in the water and notify her next of kin.
