Wellington looks for sister in Canberra

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 6/05/2016

With flights about to start between New Zealand's and Australia's capitals, Wellington's mayor wants the cities to get a bit closer.

Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown has proposed Canberra and Wellington become sister cities.

"Wellington and Canberra have a lot in common and this relationship will help equip both cities for long-term success," she said.

She said she hoped the deal would help develop stronger economic, political and cultural ties.

"Businesses that provide services to the government sector have an obvious opportunity to expand," she said.

Councillors will vote on the idea on Wednesday.

Direct flights between Canberra and Wellington are set to run four times a week from September following a deal with Singapore Airlines.
