Wellington Mayor Justin Lester has survived a car crash and thinks it might be time for a beer.

"I was on my back from the UN Holocaust Remembrance Day at Makara Cemetary when a truck coming in the opposite direction lost control, crossed the centre line and ran into the car we were driving," Mr Lester posted on his Facebook page on Friday afternoon.

He said his chief of staff, Joseph Romanos, was driving and swerved out of the way. Mr Romanos bore the brunt of the impact.

"We're both OK, but feeling a bit ginger. Probably time for a beer," Mr Lester said.

He posted an image showing the front of the council car completely smashed in.
