Wellington has come out ahead of Edinburgh and Vienna as the top city in the world to live in, according to a global survey that factored in measures such as cost of living, pollution and house prices.

Using data from crowdsourcing website Numbeo and Deutsche Bank, the survey published in the Financial Times found big cities - such as London and New York fared - badly out of the 47 countries that were looked at, when things such as commute times, air quality and healthcare were considered.

Wellington deputy mayor Paul Eagle says the survey is an endorsement his city is on the right track.

"Wellingtonians know we live in the best spot on earth, and now the rest of the world is hearing about it as well," he said.

"It's also a powerful reminder of the things we need to protect for future generations: Our local environment, affordable and accessible housing, ease of movement, quality public transport, and good-paying jobs."

The survey also found London had the most expensive public transport, 48 per cent more costly than New York.

The cheapest cities to live in were Mumbai and New Delhi, while Zurich was the most expensive; and Milan was the priciest place for a weekend break.
