Wellington rain easing but slip closes SH3

Persistent rain that has soaked the Wellington region during the past few days is set to ease.

The Fire Service says it hasn't had any weather-related callouts but the New Zealand Transport Agency is reporting slips are affecting some roads, around the capital and in Taranaki.

The MetService says there will be heavy rain at times on Sunday afternoon, particularly in the eastern hills, before it eases this evening.

In Taranaki, a slip closed State Highway 3 between the Awakino Tunnel and Tongaporutu.

No local detour is available and motorists are urged to avoid the area, the NZTA said.

A slip halfway up on the Featherston side of the Rimutaka Hill, north of Wellington, is blocking the southbound lane of SH2.

There are also other minor slips on SH2 and the highway is down to one lane northbound, north of the Kennedy-Good Bridge in the Hutt Valley because of fallen trees.

On Saturday there was surface flooding in parts of the Kapiti Coast.
