Wellington Zoo celebrates success © Facebook / Wellington Zoo Wellington Zoo celebrates success Wellington Zoo is predicting ongoing growth after having the best year in its 110 years of operation.

The zoo, which is run by a trust on behalf of Wellington City Council, welcomed 260,809 visitors this year, 11 per cent more than expected.

"Since becoming a charitable trust in 2003, our visitation has grown over 62 per cent - about 100,000 visitors," says chief executive Karen Fifield.

More visitors than ever took part in Close Encounters, and income from retail operations is helping to provide care for the animals.

For every $1 of council funding, the zoo generates economic and social value of $2.43, according to a study.

As the world's first carboNZero zoo, Wellington Zoo is continuing to work to reduce its impact on the environment.

"This year, we installed 48 solar panels to lower our carbon emissions even further. We have been able to achieve carboNZero certification again this year - as we have every year since we first gained it in 2013," Ms Fifield said.

She said the zoo is looking forward to a bigger and better year next year.
