New Zealand freeskier Jackson Wells has landed a bronze medal on debut at the X Games in Hafjell, Norway.

Wells was the top scoring competitor in the qualifying heats for the Big Air event, and came into the eight-man final with all guns blazing.

In a unique format, the X-Games Big Air final is run against the clock with competitors given 23 minutes to complete as many laps of the jump as possible.

The combined total of a competitor's top two scores from two different tricks is used to determine the final placings.

Wells was placed fifth after his first two runs, then crashed on his third to put the pressure on run four.

He managed a cleaner effort but was still outside the medals until landing his biggest trick of the night on his fifth run to leapfrog into third place with 82 points.

Sweden's Henrik Harlaut won gold with a combined 92-point total, with Eirik Saeteroy of Norway second on 85.
