Jets coach Mark Jones said the injury-ravaged club would turn to the player market following their disappointing start to the season which has yielded just one win, three draws and five losses.

"We'd like to come to a mutual agreement with some players to terminate their contracts and open up two or three places in our squad," Jones told SBS.

"Some players are not getting game-time even when we've had a lot of injuries."

Journeyman Smeltz, 35, is back in Australia having completed a short stint in Malaysia following his exit from Sydney FC at the end of the 2015-16 season.

The A-League's second-highest scorer with 83 goals, Smeltz is keen on a return to the competition.

He was also open to offers in Asia.

Jones indicated Smeltz, who's also played with Wellington Phoenix, Gold Coast and Perth, would be a good fit for a Jets outift struggling for goals this season.

"It's about trying to get the best fit for the club, but he is certainly someone we're looking at," Jones said.

"Someone of Shane Smeltz's quality we'd have to be interested in."
