West Coast river victim to be farewelled

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 16/06/2016

A man who died after being swept away in a swollen West Coast river will be farewelled in Greymouth.

Barry Petrie, 66, was in a 4WD with Sandra and Michael Saunders, their toddler Emily and another man, when the vehicle became submerged while crossing the swollen Poerua River, south of Hokitika, on June 9.

All five got out of the car, but Emily and Mr Petrie were swept away.

Mr Petrie's body was found the following day but there has been no sign of Emily. Police called off the search for her body on Thursday, saying they had "exhausted all avenues".

The Saunders family have said they will be forever grateful to Mr Petrie for trying to save their little girl.

His funeral will be held in Greymouth on Friday.
