PERTH, Australia — The Western Bulldogs opened the Australian Football League playoffs on Thursday with an upset 14.15 (99) to 7.10 (52) win over the West Coast, eliminating the Perth-based Eagles from further play.

The Bulldogs advanced to next weekend's second round, where they will play one of the losing teams from the qualifying finals under the second-chance playoff format for the top four teams.

Geelong plays Hawthorn on Friday and Sydney takes on Greater Western Sydney on Saturday in the qualifying finals, with the winners of those matches advancing to the semifinals in two weeks.

Adelaide will play North Melbourne in the other elimination final on Saturday.

The grand final is scheduled for Oct. 1 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
