The West family is returning to New Zealand television screens with NZ on Air announcing it will support a third season of Westside.

The TV3 drama, a prequel to Outrageous Fortune, will get $6,583,500 in funding for eight 60-minute episodes.

The third season will pick up where the second series left off.

It will take Ted (David de Lautour) and Rita West (Antonia Prebble) into 1982, and producers South Pacific Pictures say they will to continue to weave historical events into the story lines.

"The Wests and New Zealand in the 80s provide such a rich bed for a drama it would be difficult to resist seeing where the writers can take us next," NZ on Air chief executive Jane Wrightson said.

"We are thrilled to support this well-made, quintessential Kiwi drama again, which along with the previous decisions announced from this round will maintain a range of local drama in primetime."
