A Wellington cafe that made changes to meet Heart Foundation criteria has been judged to have the best kids' menu in New Zealand.

Rata Cafe won the top gong at the 2016 Munch Food Awards from a field of more than 60 nominations.

Earlier this year, the Heart Foundation launched its Kids' Choice programme to support cafes and restaurants in meeting specific nutritional standards.

Foundation food and nutrition manager Dave Monro says more needs to be done to improve children's menus throughout the country, like Rata has done.

"What we're seeing is a lot of fried foods, high-sugar beverages and very few vegetables being offered to children when they're dining out with their parents," he said.

"It's true that parents and kids often want a treat when they're eating out as a family, but that doesn't mean unhealthy items should be dominating kids' menus."

Mr Monro said that, by turning the traditional children's menu on its head and offering more healthy choices, chefs and restaurateurs would be investing in their future customers.

He also said parents and caregivers who saw a lack on healthy options on offer for children should challenge the establishment to improve its game.
