Wgtn-Kapiti highway reopens after flooding

The main route from Wellington to the Kapiti Coast has reopened after flooding and slips caused by heavy rain had forced a section to be closed.

The NZ Transport Agency says State Highway 1 is open with one lane in each direction and with speed restrictions.

The agency advised motorists to drive with caution and to the conditions, adding that there could be delays over the course of Tuesday night as the backlog cleared.

NZTA regional performance manager Mark Owen said SH58 from SH1 at Paremata to Haywards Interchange at SH2 would remain closed overnight because of severe flooding and slips.

Also staying closed would be two local routes, Grays Road and Paekakariki Hill Road.

Mr Owen said there was significant damage to parts of the network and motorists would continue to experience delays on Wednesday.

Wellington was cut off for a period on Tuesday as wet weather deluged the region.

As conditions eased, SH2 linking the city to Hutt Valley was reopened, although with only one northbound lane between Ngauranga to Petone.
