Wgtn office block closed for further tests

© AP Images A central Wellington building will remain closed for the next two days done while further tests are done after the discovery of a potentially hazardous substance.

The 14-storey Lambton House, which houses Vodafone, Education New Zealand and Victoria University's continuing education centre, was cleared of staff on Monday afternoon after the find in the lift well.

Vodafone says air testing within common area lobbies, stairwells and offices returned negative results for asbestos.

However, small amounts of asbestos were found in samples of the substance taken from the the lift shaft.

On Wednesday, the building owners and WorkSafe will conduct further air tests within the lift core and take dust swabs from within the lift shaft and office floors.

Results are expected by Thursday morning.
