NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 21/04/2016

Hundreds of thousands of dollars, along with drugs, illegal firearms and even a house have been seized by police in Wellington this year.

Officers in the capital have confiscated more than $170,000, destroyed 2000 cannabis plants as well as impounding significant amounts of other illicit substances in a targeted raids against drug dealers.

Police have also seized cars and even a house.

Since the operation began four months ago, 40 search warrants have been executed in Kapiti, Wairarapa, Porirua, Hutt Valley and Wellington City resulting in 79 arrests, including 12 gang members.

Wellington organised crime leader Tim Leitch says despite the proactive approach to disrupting drug supplies throughout the district, enforcement alone cannot reduce the demand for illicit substances.

"We need to all do our bit to help out those friends and family we know are struggling with the effects and problems that drugs cause," Detective Senior Sergeant Leitch said on Thursday.

During the operation, police have referred 17 cases to Child, Youth and Family after children were found living in drug dealing houses or were in the care of drug dealers.
