Whanganui and Rangitikei schools to close

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 4/04/2017

All schools in Whanganui and Rangitikei will be closed on Wednesday after a state of emergency was declared in both districts.

The declaration came after advice that the tail end of Tropical Cyclone Debbie could produce heavy flooding.

The Ministry of Education says school closures are automatic when a state of emergency is declared.

The ministry has also advised all early childhood centres in the two districts to close.

On Tuesday, heavy rain closed seven schools in the Waikato, Taranaki, Whanganui and Manawatu regions.

Two early childhood centres in Wairarapa were also shut.

Given that the severe wet weather is forecast to continue in many areas of the country until early Thursday, further closures are possible, the ministry says.

Parents should check with schools or early childhood services, either online or directly, for updated information.
