The Wellington native has been crocked with a hamstring strain and will be replaced by travelling reserve Renee Wickliffe.

Kiwi skipper Sarah Goss hoped Whata-Simpkins' absence wouldn't dent the side's tournament chances, having been drawn against Brazil, England and rivals Australia.

The Black Ferns Sevens currently sit at the top of the women's series, ahead of Australia, who they have defeated twice on the trot.

"It's going to be really awesome, extremely excited to get into the tournament, we've got a tough pool so it's going to be a tough day," Goss said.

"We have to beat the best if we want to be the best."

BLACK FERNS SEVENS: Sarah Goss (c), Michaela Blyde, Kelly Brazier, Theresa Fitzpatrick, Tyla Nathan-Wong, Cheyelle Robins-Reti, Alena Saili, Terina Te Tamaki, Ruby Tui, Renee Wickliffe, Niall Williams, Portia Woodman. TRAVELLING RESERVE: Rebekah Cordero-Tufuga.
