Whincup on pole at QR Supercars

Holden's Jamie Whincup has secured his second pole position of the year for Sunday's 200km Supercars race at Queensland Raceway.

The Red Bull Racing driver, seeking a 100th career race win, clocked a fastest lap of one minute and 09.4113 seconds to take pole position for the second and final race this weekend at Ipswich.

Whincup will start alongside veteran stablemate Craig Lowndes, who sat out the final five minutes of the 20-minute session after clocking a 1:09.5012.

Saturday race winner Shane Van Gisbergen sat out most of the session before taking to the track in the dying minutes.

He posted a 1:09.6041 lap on his first run to qualify fourth alongside Ford's Chaz Mostert (1:09.5762).

Defending champion Mark Winterbottom will start fifth but was left fuming after feeling young rookie Kurt Kostecki had baulked his chance to set a pole lap.

Winterbottom said Kostecki had stopped dangerously at turn two during his flying lap and it had cost him a chance to set a faster time.

Kostecki, 18, is competing in his second Supercars event as an injury replacement for Lee Holdsworth.

Sunday's race starts at 2.05pm.
