Six-time series champion Jamie Whincup was fastest in final practice before top 10 qualifying for the Supercars series opener in Adelaide on Saturday.

The Holden star clocked one minute, 19.76 seconds in the 20 minute session on the tough street circuit, holding out teammate Shane van Gisbergen.

Defending series champion van Gisbergen grabbed provisional pole on Friday ahead of the top 10 shootout which will determine the grid's first five rows for Saturday's opening 250km race.

Remarkably, Holden's van Gisbergen was just 0.0001 of a second faster than Ford's Scott McLaughlin in Friday's qualifying.

The top 10 shootout starts at 1230 AEDT.

Whincup's race lap record (1:21.05) is expected to fall on Saturday.

Dunlop claimed "all" lap records would come under threat this year after introducing a faster - yet durable - soft control tyre this season.

Regardless of timing, one record is guaranteed to be broken on Saturday.

Perth high school student Alex Rullo - just 16 - will officially become the youngest Supercars driver in Saturday's series opening race.

He will start at the back of the 26-strong field after a qualifying effort to forget.

Nissan's Simona de Silvestro - the first female full-time Supercars driver - will start from third last on the grid.
