White Island activity dies down

The volcanic alert level of White Island has been lowered after ash analysis suggested this week's minor eruption was not driven by new magma.

The alert level for the Bay of Plenty volcano was dropped from 3 to 2 and the aviation code lowered from orange to yellow, GNS Science said on Thursday.

It appears the ash emission has ended, says volcanologist Steven Sherburn.

Seismic and acoustic activity on the island remained low and gas movements had not changed substantially since before the eruption.

"Analysis of ash collected on Wednesday shows no evidence that Tuesday's eruption was driven by new magma," he said.

"Instead, gas flow dragged recently loosened material to the surface."

GNS Science noted the island was still capable of erupting without prior warning.
