A lack of activity on White Island has prompted a downgrading of the volcanic alert level after last week's eruption.

The Bay of Plenty volcano erupted on September 13 spewing ash into the air and prompting an upgrade to the alert level to 3 and a rising of the aviation code to orange.

GNS Science dropped both two days after the eruption after analysis and on Monday lowered the alert level to 1 from 2. The aviation code remains at yellow.

Volcanologist Brad Scott said weekend observations suggested no further sustained ash emissions have occurred from the active vents and seismic and acoustic activity remains low.

He said intermittent ash may occur in the steam plumes and it was still capable of erupting without prior warning.
