White Sox lose thriller to Australia

New Zealand have suffered their second loss at the pre-world championship tournament in the United States, going down 7-6 to a fast-finishing Australia.

After losing their opening game 5-0 to Canada at the World Cup of Softball tournament in Oklahoma City, the White Sox more competitive in the trans-Tasman clash.

They led 6-5 heading into the seventh and final innings but were foiled by a home run struck by Stacey Porter, which also brought home a second run.

Porter also struck a home run in the first innings to push Australia 4-0 clear early on.

New Zealand had the better of the middle stages, producing more hits, including two home runs to Lara Andrews.

A double-header on Friday against the Czech Republic and Japan awaits the White Sox, who are preparing for the world championships starting in Canada next week.
