White Sox lose to Canada at US tournament

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 5/07/2016

New Zealand have lost 5-0 to Canada in the first round of a tournament in Oklahoma City as they continue their buildup to the women's softball world championship.

The White Sox conceded four runs in the first inning and another in the second before keeping a clean sheet for the last five innings.

However, they failed to provide any batting pressure on a slick Canadian pitching effort.

It was the first of six games at a World Cup of Softball tournament, in which New Zealand's other pool opponents are Australia, the Czech Republic, United States B and Mexico.

Teams are using the tournament to prepare for the world championship in Surrey, British Columbia from July 15-24.

New Zealand's pool opponents in Canada are Italy, Kenya and Peru.

They placed eighth at the 2014 world championship in the Netherlands, where Japan defended their title.
