New Zealand have lodged their first win at a women's international softball tournament in Sydney but it won't be enough to reach the final.

The White Sox have struggled at the four-day International Down Under event, having suffered twin losses to Japan (8-0 and 11-0) along with a 7-1 opening defeat against Australia on Thursday.

They went down 7-0 to an All Stars selection on Friday but reversed that result a day later, winning 1-0 courtesy of a run scored by Aaria Tawha in the fourth innings. Pitcher Jennifer Feret-Brear gave up just three hits in the six innings she pitched.

New Zealand's last round-robin opponents on Sunday are Australia, who are poised to contest the final later against Japan.
