Tahuhu took 3-37 on Wednesday as New Zealand, aided by some superb fielding, bowled the tourists out for 156 in the 49th over.

She made the initial breakthrough when Ayesha Zafar was deceived by an in-swinger and gave keeper Katey Marin the first of the day's showcase of top catches.

The best catch was claimed by slip fielder Amy Satterthwaite, whose brilliant one-handed diving effort removed Bismah Maroof for a duck off the bowling of Holly Huddleston.

Satterthwaite also had a hand in the dismissal of the experienced Nain Abidi for 49 off Tahuhu's bowling.

Abidi's contribution was the equal highest for Pakistan, with Asmavia Iqbal finishing on 49 not out.

The White Ferns gave a debut to 16-year-old Amelia Kerr and the leg spinner claimed her maiden international wicket, removing Pakistan skipper Sana Mir for one with a caught-and-bowled.

Kerr was unlucky not have a second scalp when keeper Sidra Nawaz offered a catch that wasn't taken.

The White Ferns chased down the target in 23 overs, captain Suzie Bates top scoring with an aggressive 64 off 46 balls.

Bates and Sam Curtis, who ended unbeaten on 55, put on exactly 100 for the first wicket to put the home side on track for a comfortable victory.

The result meant Bates became the most successful White Ferns captain in ODIs, overtaking coach Haidee Tiffin.

The second match is at the same venue on Friday.
