Kiwi golfer Tim Wilkinson has continued his climb back up the leaderboard at the PGA Tour's Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina, firing a two-under 70 to sit in a tie for seventh with one round remaining.

The 37-year-old left-hander went into the third round at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte in a share of 13th place, five shots off the pace.

He mixed four birdies with two bogeys to join American Lucas Glover in a tie for seventh, four strokes behind leader Rickie Fowler.

Wilkinson is cautiously optimistic heading into the final round, and is looking to replicate his no-frills third-round form.

"There are plenty of scoring opportunities out there, you just have to play the tough holes solidly," he said.

"I'm wedging the ball really well and if I can give myself a few chances, I think I can play well."

Compatriot Danny Lee's one-over 73 left him on even par in a share of 36th place, nine strokes off the pace.
