Wilkinson rockets up leaderboard

New Zealand golfer Tim Wilkinson is just one stroke off the leaders after two rounds of the Puerto Rico Open in Rio Grande.

The 38-year-old left-hander fired a sizzling nine-under 63 to join five others in a share of fourth place.

Wilkinson's first-round 71 had left him well down the leaderboard, and he started his second round slowly with just two birdies over the first nine holes.

But he found form in the steady rain, eagling the par five second then going on to record five straight birdies in the last six holes.

"Yesterday I played pretty solidly, just didn't get much out of the round," he said.

"Then today, back nine, I got - bar one putt on No.3 - pretty much everything out of it.

"I wanted it to keep raining, I was making all the birdies in the rain. I just got a bit of momentum today, which was the big difference."

Americans Bryson DeChambeau, DA Points and Bill Lunde were locked in a three-way tie for the lead when darkness suspended second-round play.

DeChambeau fired a seven-under-par 65, Points a 69, and Lunde was four-under for the day with three holes to play after an opening 65.
