Williams to announce sporting future

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 31/05/2016

Cross-code star Sonny Bill Williams will announce the direction of his sporting future at a media conference in Auckland on Wednesday.

Reports at the weekend said the lure of a third World Cup campaign with the All Blacks had played a key part in Williams' signing a three-year deal with New Zealand Rugby through to the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

NZ Rugby chief executive Steve Tew wouldn't be drawn at Sunday's All Blacks naming on Williams' future.

"Everyone knows we're keen to keep Sonny Bill and we're working our way through that," he told Fairfax.

Williams was part of the Rugby World Cup-winning teams in 2011 and 2015 after making the shift to rugby from NRL outfit Canterbury-Bankstown mid-season in 2008.

He returned to the NRL for two seasons with the Sydney Roosters in 2013, picking up a premiership title in the process before returning to rugby in September 2014.

Williams is now among a bevy of players chasing an All Blacks Sevens spot for the Rio Olympics.
