Kane Williamson has plunged from second to fifth in the Test cricket batting rankings following a forgettable return in Wellington.

Black Caps captain Williamson scored 2 and 1 in the eight-wicket loss to South Africa in the second Test, his worst output in a 60-Test career.

It had immediate ramifications in the rankings, with in-form Indian Cheteshwar Pujara climbing to second behind runaway Australian top dog Steve Smith.

Englishman Joe Root remains ranked third while another Test skipper, India's Virat Kohli, is fourth.

Neil Wagner remains New Zealand's leading Test bowler, in 10th place on a list now topped by Indian spinner Ravindra Jadeja.
