Olympic silver medallist Nick Willis will be hunting John Walker's long-standing New Zealand mile record when he lines up at the Bislett Games in Norway early on Friday.

Walker set the mark nearly 24 years ago at the same track in Oslo, clocking three minutes, 49.08 seconds, and Willis has made no secret of the fact that he wants the record.

"Goal for Oslo mile: finally take down Sir John Walker's NZ record," Willis said on Twitter.

"I'm sure he wants it finally gone too."

Willis began his run-in to the Rio Olympics last weekend at the Diamond League meeting in Birmingham, clocking a solid 3:34.29 over 1500m to finish third, nearly five seconds down on three-time world champion Asbel Kiprop's winning time of 3:29.33.

Kiprop heads a strong field in Oslo, with a world-leading season's best of 3:51.54 set late last month at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon.

Willis' best mile time for the year came nearly five months ago in Whanganui, a more sedate 3:55.56, but he has an all-time best of 3:49.83 from the Bislett Games two years ago.
