Kiwi Marcus Daniell showed he is in sharp form less than a week out from the French Open, advancing to the doubles quarter-finals of an ATP tournament in Lyon.

Daniell and regular Brazilian partner Marcelo Demoliner combined to topple second seeds Fabrice Martin (France) and Daniel Nestor (Canada) 7-6 7-5 in the first round of the clay court event.

Fellow-New Zealander Artem Sitak is competing in Lyon, restoring his combination with American Nicholas Monroe.

At a concurrent ATP event in Geneva, New Zealand's Michael Venus has bowed out in the first round.

Venus and American Ryan Harrison went down 6-3 7-6 to American duo Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson.
