Winning Lotto ticket nearly given away

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 13/07/2016

The last of three Lotto winners to share the weekend's $40 million prize pool says he nearly gave his ticket away to a friend.

A Te Awamutu man has come forward as the third person to win more than $13m, following claims by a couple in Dunedin and another from Hamilton.

But while the latest winner is now pondering what to do with the money, he narrowly avoided giving his ticket away as a present.

"I actually bought two tickets for the draw on the weekend, and I gave one to a friend for her birthday," he said.

"I called her up after I found out I'd won and said to her `you must be the unluckiest person in New Zealand'. Everyone else had one-in-3.8 million odds of winning, but your odds were 50-50. Luckily she sees the funny side."

He says he had no idea anyone in the town had won until checking his ticket at his local supermarket.

"When she told me that I'd won and then how much I can't tell you the first words out of my mouth, but let's just say there was quite a bit of swearing."

There was a frantic bid to buy Lotto tickets ahead of the weekend's $40m draw, with 2.7 million tickets sold and 3000 tickets being bought every minute in the lead-up to the draw.
