The annual winter festival has started in Queenstown, but it's a bit warm.

Thousands of people gathered on the Queenstown waterfront on Friday night for a fireworks display.

During the next 10 days about 45,000 people will check out 60 events, some of which have been moved to the Remarkables Ski Area from Coronet Peak because of snow conditions.

There is a street parade on Saturday morning and the Mountain Bikes on Snow event at 11am is one of the events moved to the Remarkables.

Queenstown Airport welcomed the first trans-Tasman night flight to Queenstown by Jetstar Airways on Friday night.

Queenstown is a popular winter destination for Australian skiers and the festival is held just before Australian school holidays.

"Hopefully you guys get the same front that has just dumped snow on the Australian ski fields," a person posted on Coronet Peak's Facebook page.
