Police have identified and spoken with a man seen in CCTV footage with the woman who was attacked and taken to a quarry in the Auckland suburb of Riverhead.

Police released a series of CCTV footage this week, including footage of the woman walking outside the Mobil on the corner of K and Ponsonby Roads, and of a vehicle they believe was carrying the woman into the Sawmill Road quarry on Sunday morning before it sped away, after she had been badly beaten.

The man who was seen talking to the woman outside the Mobil was cooperative, and police say he spoke with them at great lengths.

They have also spoken with several of her friends who confirm she was outside a bar on K Road around midnight.

They said the woman may have been drugged and attacked before she came to in the quarry at Riverhead to find a baseball bat-armed man standing over her, calling the attack "disturbing" and "nasty".

The woman doesn't remember a significant period of time from being with her friends in Ponsonby, until she woke up in the quarry to find she was being attacked.

Police are building a timeline from midnight to 2am.

She suffered serious gashes to her head and face, had a broken thumb and was extremely traumatised.

"The victim has suffered a terrible ordeal and is now recovering with family members, we are doing everything we can to support her," Detective Senior Sergeant Kim Libby said..

Police are still looking for the car seen entering and leaving the quarry, which is said to be very similar to a 2008 Ford Mondeo.

Police say they've been inundated with calls and Facebook messages.
